You can meet idiots anywhere, but this should be fine. Stay alert.
Go in the car with the conductor.

Just be smart. Stick to busier cars and areas and stay conscious of your surroundings. If you feel unsafe, get out and switch cars at the next stop. Don't tune out, pay attention to whats going on around you.

I don't take my kids on it anymore even though the little ones would love it. Too many inappropriate gestures and things happening.

If anyone wants to know which train the conductor is at then they should look for this black and white sign. The conductor has to point at it when the train stops so you know that the conductor is in that car.

Here are some New Yorkers having fun with the train conductors who have to point at the black and white sign at every stop--

Here is the reason why they have to point at the sign--

Remain vigilant at all times even if you are in the same car as the conductor. And glad that masks are no longer required.

She was 21, it was 3am, he offered to show her around and she agreed.

I don't feel safe on the subway but I take it regularly anyway.

Fascinating! I've been commuting to work by train for the past 20+ years and didn't know about this sign!

Between people being shoved down the stairs, shoved on to the tracks and raped in front of everyone, absolutely not. That's not even mentioning the uptick in antisemitic violence. And also the homeless people that use the train as their bed and toilet. I used to take it all the time and now it's a hard no.

NY has already moved on to polio as Hochul declared a state of emergency after polia was found in the wastewater in Long Island (were many illegal aliens were dropped off in the middle of the night).
I cant help but wonder what "emergency" will be declared just in time for elections in Nov to force everyone to vote by mail in ballot. Maybe we should have bets on it Tongue Out

I used to take the train pretty often with or without my kids to do shopping in Manhattan, appointments, children's museums, Central Park Zoo, etc. Haven't done it recently, though due to the situation.
As someone not living in america, can you clue us in as to what "situation" you are talking about?

Homeless people taking over the streets and subway, serious upticks in crimes like gun point robbery, shootings, violence to strangers, rapes...

Can you point me to the statistics of these crimes? I only know about the one, middle of the night rape.

I might be more cautious late at night or if the whole car was empty, but other than that I'm good Smile

I asked for statistics, not reports. Of course crimes are going to be reported. Nobody has chosen to show that there are XX more crimes right now than there were, say, a year ago. That's why I asked for numbers.

I drive to the city when I have to.
Years ago I used the subway. I was attacked twice. (Once someone threw something at me once someone pushed me). I also had to regularly wait for several trains because they were too full and I have anxiety about full rooms/trains/places etc.

I stopped taking it after a couple years and I’ve heard many stories from my colleagues who do take the train. They don't like it but most Don't have a car. One colleague was pushed down some steps. Another was flashed by a man. Another had a homeless person pee in the (full) car between stations. The stories go on.

I get people need to but I know that most who do don’t feel safe and use it as “quickly” as they can.

It's really easy to google this information

Overall index crime in New York City increased in July 2022, by 30.5% compared with July 2021 (11,619 v. 8,906). Six of the seven major index-crime categories saw increases, driven by a 40.6% increase in grand larceny (4,588 v. 3,262), a 37.2% increase in robbery (1,730 v. 1,261), and a 25.6% rise in burglary (1,325 v. 1,055).
