Ds diagnosed with ADHD. I don't know what to do about it!!

Is there any doc that doesn't go straight to meds tries other routes first?

Is your DC on natural route for adhd that it helped DC as if on meds?

Where do I start??

Feel free to pm me for more info, but it’s worth trying fish oil, magnesium, zinc, and phosphatidylserine (vitamin friends makes a kosher gummy version). These were suggested by our pediatrician and we’re seeing a difference.

I'm reading the book Finally Focused and it has a bunch of suggestions in term of diet and vitamins/minerals.

Where do you live? You can send your son to someone who specialises in this to learn techniques - behavioural therapy can be very helpful. Medication can also often be extremely effective, especially in conjunction with therapies, so please don't discount it right away. You wouldn't write off insulin for a diabetic, in hopes of trying an "all natural" therapy right? Sometimes medication is very helpful, even temporarily, to train the brain and show it what it's suppose to be doing, so that they know what it's supposed to feel like when they're not on it. If your child does need medication, please don't make them struggle and suffer any longer.
ADHD meds are also typically very easy to stop, so it's worth considering even if on a trial basis (under a doctor's supervision) to see how DS reacts. Untreated ADHD can be way more detrimental and damaging than the medication.

Finally focused is a great book, very easy to understand and implement.

We made huge progress addressing emotional regulation, hyperactivity, focus and impulsivity by following that book, addressing diet and gut health, treating strep, yeast and parasites, and doing homeopathy. Different kid today.

I started reading the book. Lot of great information but very overwhelming. Is there anyone I can contact that can guide me more clearly with dosages and supplements according to the book?

I don’t understand how parents are comfortable pumping their kid full of supplements but wouldn’t try meds.

Supplements work along with the body and have a great safety profile. Meds work against the body and have a long list of risks and side effects.

To me, it isn’t even so much about meds vs supplements, it’s more about treating root causes, however that’s done.

You trusted your Doctors diagnoses, I would try trusting your doctor with supplements/medication too. See what he/she says. If that doesn't work, then look for other means.

Because meds have side effects like insomnia and loss of appetite and lack of weight gain in growing children. Supplements not only don't have that dude effects but can't reverse them.

Besides for which you can do both

Magnesium is a good place to start. Foot soaks are great. You can do magnesijm flakes and epsom salt. You can also give orally up to 5mg per lb of body weight. The best forms are malate, taurate and threonate. Start low and work your way up.

After that I would add in a b complex, and then fish oil and phosphatidylserine.

I was also scared of meds... now I'm a fan..
My son is on Ritalin but if you're scared of its side effects (which I can tell you how to manage .. no big deal) there's also Intuniv -no side effects and lasts longer, ask your Dr about it !

How much magnesium orally? Chapter 1 has a magnesium citrate gummy. Is that ok? Enough magnesium?
I wont do foot soaks... kids would never do that. A chewable vitamin? That they will do.

Kids are on meds but want to help any other way possible since meds do wear off...

When I was diagnosed with ADHD my parents tried everything. Including natural. I was taking about 10 vitamin supplements a day. At one point I tried going off gluten, dairy, and sugar.
None of these things help. They just made me frustrated. No kid likes swallowing numerous pills. I agreed only because I was desperate.
What actually helped me was when I went on medication. I was on it for about 6 months. It taught me what a normal kid is actually supposed to act like- I had no idea before that what I was doing wrong. Once I figured out how to be normal, I was able to try to get there.
I did notice that excessive sugar makes it worse.

I see phosphatidylserine says it's a "weight gainer" . Ds is a lready a weight gainer. He's obese. Eats way too much. Do I skip it?

It's very likely that his weight gain is due to his impulsivity. Meds can really help with this.

My personal experience.
I have 2 kids who are now medicated.
One is super hyper but has always done well at school. He is sensitive to sugar and food coloring and has asthma. We went natural until 6 months ago. He is 9. We put him on meds and never looked back. The only side effect I see is that he has a hard time falling asleep. We manage this by giving it early (6am) and using melatonin and a weighted blanket. At this point, he insists on taking the meds even on vacation because he feels calmer on it.

My second son is not typical ADHD. He has a lot of learning issues that no one could pinpoint. We went to a top tier psychologist who diagnosed ADD and suggested meds. Would you know it? He went from not reading, not writing, stuttering and dyspraxia to the top of the class. He hasn't received less than 100 on a test since he started, he made his school soccer team, he started painting. He is 11 years old.

If a child needs meds, they need them.
If this is not really a lack of the specific chemical in ritalin but instead just a child who is a bit hyper, out of the box etc, then natural things can help.
I'd love to hear from someone who themselves has ADHD, has tried all the natural stuff AND tried meds who can say what the child might prefer.
