One of my kids claims that the reason he doesn't like meatballs is because of tomato sauce, so I'm looking for an alternative.

I miss the old Rokeach mushroom soup!
Now I reconstitute the Osem power (with lots of fresh mushrooms and onions) not as good, but good enough.

I bake the meatballs for 25 minutes (well seasoned - they are delish) and serve with salted spaghetti for those that want "plain". Drop the baked meatballs into bubbling sauce, for those that like classic meatballs and spaghetti.

If you can convince my family that marinara is not tomato sauce, I will be forever grateful.

Ha! I don’t like tomato sauce but I like it with Marinara. For me, tomato sauce has more of a “spice” to it and I prefer more bland

Marinara is tomato sauce.
I think my mother used to make one with Duck Sauce, but I don't have the recipe.

Thin out a cup of duck sauce with water; add 3 tbsp soy sauce and some crushed garlic.

There is always the classic recipe with grape jelly and heinz chili sauce which is basically ketchup. Would your kids eat that?
