According to Jewish tradition, the Matriarch Rachel wept from her tomb as the Jews passed by on the road into Babylonian exile. Rachel’s Tomb has since become a popular pilgrimage site for prayer, especially on holidays and Rachel’s yahrtzeit of 11 Cheshvan, which is the Hebrew calendar date commemorating her death.

For centuries, Rachel’s descendants have come here to pour out their hearts to her—the eternal mother who dwells in a lonely wayside grave and is a continuous source of comfort to her children. It is here that thousands entreat for health, children, and success, and Rachel prays for them as well, eliciting the Divine promise of their return to the Promised Land.
