people do not realize how easily a fire could spread ... take the time to learn some basics
and if you do not have a fire extinguisher buy one - keeping in mind there are different type of fires and different types of extinguishers ... keep baking soda handy as well ... one might think fire is fire but you would be wrong ... there are wood/paper fires, grease/gas fires, and electric fires ... all of which need to be put out differently ... water does NOT always do the trick and can even become more harmful for example in a grease fire where it could spread or an electric fire where it would electrocute ... knowledge is power ...

Quote:
At the Fire Fighting Training school they would demonstrate
this with a deep fat fryer set on the fire field... An instructor would don
a fire suit and using an 8 oz cup at the end of a 10-foot pole toss water
onto the grease fire.

The results got the attention of the students. The water, being heavier
than oil, sinks to the bottom where it instantly becomes superheated. The
explosive force of the steam blows the burning oil up and out.

On the open field, it became a thirty foot high fireball. Inside the confines
of a kitchen, the fireball hits the ceiling and fills the entire room.

Also, do not throw sugar or flour on a grease fire. One cup creates the
explosive force of two sticks of dynamite.

Wow. I always knew not to use water but I never knew why.

With the way I cook, DH bought a fire extinguisher to keep near the stove. I should be insulted, but I have used it already a few times.

This video shows how to put out the fire and also what happens when water is poured on.
Also shows a woman who was obviously victim to such a fire.
