I'm looking for an ophthalmologist, the equivalent of Dr. Steel's office in NY. I need pediatric and adults. Any recommendations? I tried one in Freehold, they where great with my kid but then when I went back for myself they where rude and inpatient. They also only see kids over 9 and I have one that is younger. I am willing to travel.

I use Dr Wang. My dc is now 17, been a patient there for years.

Dr Wang has an office is Westchester and NYC.

I don't think they see adult patients.

It's hard to find one equivalent to steel. We just used Keelan eyecare for both pediatric and adult and were pretty happy.

Keep your NY doctor if you can.

If I'm traveling back to NY, I might as well go to Steel's office if they take my new insurance. I'm not on Jersey Care.

I'm finding it ridiculous. One of my kids used to see many specialists. One of them we are keeping the NY one because we only need to go every second year but eye dr for multiple kids.... I need someone closer and Dr. Steel's office only lets you bring 2 kids per day so that would mean multiple trips.

Someone recently told me that Dr Steele doesn't take insurance anymore but definitely something to verify.
For pediatric opthamology many use Dr Wagner in Newark, Dr Campolaltarro but he is only in NJ once a month and be prepared to spend a very long time in the office. Some will travel to his office in the city as it is much quicker. Dr Engel is in new Brunswick I think. More locally some use Dr turtle or pardone, they are in the same practice. Idk how they compare to Dr Steele though.
Is Dr Spedic in toms river still around?
Maybe ask your pediatrician who they recommend.
In General, although there are many children in Lakewood there is no top hospital or anything locally to attract expert doctors to the area. Most better specialista are a distance to drive.

My kids never actually met Dr. Steele, they saw other people in the office. Thank you for this list. I will see who takes our insurance. I have no problem traveling but I'm finding this ridiculous. Everyone here just uses optometrists in glasses stores.

If it’s for regular vision exams, try Dr Harvey richman or dr Moshe Roth. They are optometrists but fcovd certified developmental optometrists and do a super thorough exam. Optometrists are actually better trained to diagnose and treat standard vision issues than ophthalmologists.

For some, be prepared to wait a while for an appointment. Also, some practices have more than one location and may have something available sooner just a bit further....

If it’s just for routine vision testing you don’t need an opthomologist. I’m happy with the optometrist who works in Gefen optical. I feel that the exams are thorough and the eyeglass prescriptions are accurate. I did have 2 children who were originally seeing an opthamologist in chop hospital. We were coming from top eye care and after searching we are happy with Gefen.
If you need an opthomologist I’ve been using Dr. Moshe Rothkopf for myself. He sees children as well but there would probably have to be a medical diagnosis for insurance to cover him-(at least that’s how it is with my insurance).

Dr Turtel and Pardone are very popular. I've seen adults and children in the waiting room.

Dr Engel is in East Brunswick. And the last time we saw Dr Campolattaro he had a 4 hour wait!! It definitely would be quicker to go to the city. But I wanted to use insurance.

When I called ophthalmologist to make an appointment, they refused to give me an app!!! I was not going for routine eye check up. my son had extremely irritated eyes probably due to allergies.
It was totally crazy!
Then I made an app in place in freehold and when they called to confirm appointment I asked who it was with and it was the same optometrist I had seen in eyes on the 9!(he stopped working there!)
So I went back to Dr cohen in eyes on the 9. It's very hard to get an appointment unless you have an emergency. For routine eye check up, they're very good!
