DH and I would love to go to Rome for a few days soon,(not over Shabbos).

Do any of you know of a reasonable hotel in a area where we could buy kosher food.
Also any recommendations for what are nice things to do in Rome.
If travelling from London, is it cheaper to fly or by Eurostar?
TIA

My favorite hotel is the Monte Cenci, which is a small place on the edge of the ghetto. They have decent rates, although the rooms are small (but clean). They will also get you kosher cake/bread for breakfast for a few extra euros and have jam under hashgacha. Breakfast options workable for kosher customers include coffee and juice (your call if you will eat that) and sometimes fruit. It is a 30 second walk to Yotvata kosher dairy restaurant (Meet Nino the waiter who is charming and speaks a little Hebrew since he grew up in Egypt) and less than 5 minutes to a myriad of other meat and dairy restaurants, two bakeries, and a tiny grocery. It is also a 30 second walk to the Coop food store, but there are limited things you can buy there (fruits and vegetables and a few packaged cookies with hashgacha). It is a good location for most tourist attractions and I have found their staff to be helpful. Have stayed there about 5 times and encountered several other Jewish families (one British).
Activities: Golf cart tour of city, night tour of Colosseum, walk through Jewish ghetto and Trastevere, Day trip to Ostia (Europe's oldest synagogue ruins in huge archeological excavation of old city outside Rome), Food market tour Campo Di Fiore, Baths of Caracalla, Borghese Gardens. Day trip by train to Florence.

We stayed in the boutique hotel in the Jewish ghetto. Across from the school. Location is amazing and it was very nice with lots of kosher stuff for breakfast.b

Also, don't miss a tour of the museum in the Great Synagogue and Shabbos Davening (particularly Friday night). There is a choir and the architecture is magnificent. Be prepared to contact them in advance with a scan of your passport for admission (if you're from the UK, you are probably used to that). Go to the guard booth before Shabbos and they will instruct you on where to send your information. If you go in the warm weather take a tip from the locals and bring a hand fan since the women's section is all the way up. There is no eruv, so you would have to drop it in advance.

You can prepay for Shabbos meals at Ba Ghetto. They are about 45 euros per person per meal. The food was decent, although my dh complained that it was a bit skimpy. I thought it was great and enjoyed the feeling of having Shabbos with other Jews from around the world. Just check to see that the meat meets your requirements since it is a bit different from other places regarding glatt. They also offer fish and vegetarian options. We saw plenty of frum Jews eating there.

One of my favorite food places in the Ghetto is the Boccione Bakery, which is a tiny hole in the wall in the center of the Ghetto without a marker. However, if you arrive between 8 am and about 12 pm, you will likely see a line coming out of the door and a window full of cake and pastries. Much later than that, you chance that they will be sold out of most items. I highly recommend the Cornetto (like a Croissant) in almond or apricot jam for which you need to arrive close to the opening time to score before they sell out. They also specialize in a biscuit called Pizza Ebraica which is nothing like a pizza and is a burnt cake with pinenuts and raisins which is mildly sweet. It's a Roman specialty and worth tasting. They also sell chocolate or cherry ricotta tart by the piece or weight. On Friday, you need to arrive early to buy challah with sugar crystals and candied cherries (amazing when fresh) and an almond tart. They will wrap if you need a gift. Next door, you can get a lovely cookie tray from Kosher Cakes for about 10 euros. I brought this home in my suitcase to my kids and they thought it was fabulous! Kosher Cakes also sells the to-die-for Maritozza, a brioche type bun stuffed with whipped cream. Busy in Brooklyn did a whole blog on this amazing pastry and also had some tips for arranging a cooking class in the Ghetto. https://busyinbrooklyn.com/divine-italy/ Yotvata offers one as do the Meat Places. On an early trip, we did it at Su Ghetto (not to be confused with Ba Ghetto) and it was fantastic. You cook with the chef and then eat your freshly prepared meal. There is a pizza place in the Ghetto, called Bona Pizza, which is very popular with kids and Moms at the school. When school lets out at 3 or on Friday about 1, it is packed! I thought it was fun to see what life is like for Jewish kids in other countries. Bona's Pizza is sold by weight and they have a great assortment of toppings. White Pizza was especially good.

If you are looking for gifts, you can find handmade items in the Campo Di Fiore (wooden cutting boards, pottery) and more moderate priced clothing stores around the Campo (many with mezzuzot!) If you want a nice souvenir for yourself, look into beautiful but somewhat pricey leather gloves at Sermoneta near the Spanish Steps (I was excited to see the plates for the family's makom kavua in the Great Synagogue). https://www.sermonetagloves.com/
