How can I make this closet functional

This is my coat closet how.ever the rods are too high for the kids to reach and it goes inwards so can’t reach it easily if I switch to one long rod across lower down my husbands and my coat won’t fit.

Keep one side high so you and dh can use and place a lower kid friendly one across.
Or if it’s high enough a lower and higher bar across.
(That’s the quick and easy fix)

Replace the two short rods with one long rod spanning the entire width of the closet, then hang from it a second bar like this :

Kiddie coats hang from lower bar, adult jackets hang right above it, long adult coats hang from main rod on either side.

Or add two short rods at child height below the existing ones, add one long closet rod across the full span of the closet for adult coats. Top short rods for adult jackets. Disadvantage is that you'll have to shove aside adult coats to reach jackets and kiddie coats, but if you don't cram the rod full, that shouldn't be a big issue. You can also just lower the short rods to child height and install shallow shelves parallel to and above them for storage of non-hanging items. Same issue of adult coats blocking the shelves, so don't overload the main rod.
