My baby is 7 months and only wants to be held/ will play if I am on the floor right next to him. When is it age appropriate for babies to start being able to play a bit by themselves? Thanks.

All babies are different.

Some can play at that age, some later.

Try moving away from him, a little at a time, and see how that goes.

Try playing with your own toy next to him while he plays with his.

Personally, my children didn't like to play by themselves till age 3. Until then, they wanted me to play with them or at least be in the room. It's exhausting, but they do grow up eventially.

My 4 year old started playing on his own LOL

At the same time my 15 month old will play on his own as long as the 4 year old is nearby..

I had this with my baby who is 13 months old. She was very clingy and wouldn’t let me leave her. I think that it honestly has to do with the baby’s personality….if they’re stranger wary or clingy it might take them longer to be comfortable playing with you in a different room. Even now, I’ll have my baby come to find me when she wants me or wants me to read to or play with her.

Better to sit on floor and slowly edge away to teach baby to play.

More important, baby needs tummy time to develop.

My 12 month old can play very nicely on her own
She has been playing nicely for the last 3 months probably
Before that she needed me all the time
Once she started crawling at around 10 months she is so curious and busy exploring
