In my ds throat.

He’s very sensory - on spectrum
Came home from school yesterday saying he feels a small particle of food/peel in throat.

He’s breathing fine B’H. He didn’t choke. He felt it later on in day
No prob there. Otherwise I would have called Hatzalah.

We tried many things for it to go Down ie bread, banana, mashed potatoes but still there.

He tried to gargle out.

Took him to dr today & he can’t see anything but not worried b/c it’s not a choking hazard.
Said he’d refer to specialist for camera down throat - not sure what that is. Endoscopy maybe?

But after school today he feels same.

Any tips or experiences of similar situation would be appreciated b/c I feel so bad for him.

He thinks it’s permanent even though I’m
Reassuring him.

I know you said he’s on the spectrum, does he also have ocd or tend to perseverate or get stuck a lot?

I don't know if this is the same thing I had, but I had this happen to me several times, after losing my mind over feeling something in my throat, I went to the dentist and he was able to see it, a very small piece of food was stuck in my throat, say the width and length of a mini yellow crouton. The dentist I believe was able to take it out, and when it happened after that then I was able to go chchchch (like ch sound in challah) very strongly and eventually it would come out. My dh was able to see it in my throat. Was extremely annoying, BH this was a number of years ago and it has stopped. I would say another possibility is that he scratched his throat when swallowing something and what he is feeling is the scratch.

Have him eat pillowy soft bread or challah. It will take it down. Have him eat a nice amount.
If he still feels it afterwards, it very likely is a scratch that he's feeling. It's a very uncomfortable feeling.

He tried everything everyone has suggested.

I told him it’s prob a small scratch he’s insisting it’s not b/c he feels it moving…..

When you swallow you can feel the scratch move as the muscles contact.

But if he's saying it's not a scratch, I would not leave that alone. I'd go to an ENT emergency and have them check with a scope camera in the office.

I have had patients with things stuck in their food pipes for a few days, even with all the eating. a scratch is a diagnosis of exclusion.

Are you an ENT doctor?
So it’s not possible for it to be in his
Wind pipe?

‘a scratch is a diagnosis of exclusion‘
Do you mean that it’s the diagnosis that is the fall back? Please explain

not an ENT. I work for pediatric.
Apple peel would be a likely food item to get stuck in the food pipe.
If he not having any coughing or breathing concerns, I would assume that it is not in his wind pipe.

If he feels like something is there, I would take is seriously and send him to ENT. I would not assume it's a scratch until we visualize the area and see that something is not there. I can not imagine he got scratch from an apple/ apple peel.

In your clinic do you have a device to look down a patient’s throat?
&. If you do, are you able to remove it in your office ?
