How long do you hold them for? I have receipts from 2008 laying in my file cabinet taking up space.

I scan everything and then they are in digital files which take up no space. They are also much easier to keep track of since I can search my computer in seconds for any document.

I recall reading once that you should save tax receipts and documents for up to 7 years, in which case 2008 receipts could be thrown out, but I'm not a CPA.

7 years prior is the period open for IRS audit, so people usually keep that time period.

I have a relatively inexpensive HP Envy that prints, scans and copies. It is fine for my relatively minimal needs

You can also scan using your iPhone. The notes app.

You can but I find that for the purpose of scanning financial documents and other important data, it is better to scan and save to my computer because that way it is organized in the appropriate folders.

In my Documents Folder, I have a folder that is labeled Finances and then I create appropriate sub-folders which are stored in that Folder - I.e. Tax Documents 2021; Medical Records 2021 etc.l It is equivalent to having paper folders except mine are all digital and easily accessed and they don't take up space.
