Hi, what suit color is appropriate for my 11 year old son for a very elegant wedding? I don't keep up with the boys trends, but he is in a vulnerable state right now and very self conscious. We went to the suit store a couple, of times already and bought a navy suit but he asked me to return it as he's afraid he won't fit in with the other boys. What's appropriate with a more modern crowd?

My son around that age wears a navy suit to weddings. Most boys are wearing their shabbos suits and it’s usually a shade of navy. (We are considered yeshivish.)

From what I've seen, dark navy and black are very comparable. Black is definitely more "yeshivish" but very many yeshivish kids do dark navy, too. Alot has to do with the suit pattern.

Lighter or royal blues are considered more "modern", especially with a striking pattern.

I've seen alot of black lately. A couple years ago I wanted black but the stores didn't have. I'm assuming black is in fashion now.

Just read your question again. For 11 yo, wedding, modern crowd: I'd suggest going with a bright royal-type blue, or a navy with a very striking pattern. You can also look for a youthful gray.

DS might be right that the navy suit is "off".

I don’t think yeshivish boys wear black suits. That’s what chassidish boys wear.
Most yeshivish boys wear navy, dark navy, different shades of blue..

Could be that we mean something different by "yeshivish". In my parents' yeshivish neighborhood, you would be correct. In my yeshivish neighborhood, I would be correct. My parents and I live in the same town. Its very nuanced...

I think black is too harsh for an 11-yo boy, and navy or blue is more fitting.

But is navy blue elegant enough?

Is black considered yeshiva or chassidish?

Are lighter blues considered elegant though? They seem more casual to me.

A very light blue suit (think light denim-y) is usually casual. But a lighter blue (not quite navy or royal blue) can be very sharp and youthful. Like I said before, so much depends on the fabric pattern.
