I have to send a few independent contractors a 1099. In the past I used an accountant and would now like to do it myself.
Can I download the form?
How do I send to IRS?

I did a 1099 for my father's caretaker.

It has been a few years but as I recall I just downloaded the form and filled it in. It was very straightforward as I just needed to provide them with his information including Social Security number and the amount of money I had paid for that year.

It is completely different than when you are paying someone as an employee and you have to do both the withholding taxes, your share of FICA and send the IRS the appropriate money during the year. That is complicated and most people do hire a payroll service.

It's pretty simple. You can order the form from amazon or download it online. Fill out the details... You will need to send form A to the IRS along with the form 1096, Form B you will send to the client. Fyi, you need to have it done by January 31. Good luck

For just a couple of dollars you can use an online filing service, I find it worth the $15-$20 to just file electronically.

Which one do you use?
How can I be sure it’s a reputable legit place?

We’ve always done a manual form so I can’t answer your online question but you can buy the forms in staples or Office Depot and it’s pretty simple to fill out.

I would recommend you pick it up and fill it out manually. Here's a link

I used efile4biz because they were the cheapest for
the number of forms I needed. Intuit has a service too if you’d like a brand name but they were more expensive.
