My gas bill was over $300. Is this normal? How much is your gas bill normally?

My bill was way more than that! Depends where you live , how big your house is and how well it’s insulated. Also this year the gas rate shot up

Wow this is so eye opening! I kept asking myself what did I do wrong and what do I need to change. This is insane.

Turn down the water heater temperature to 120°, turn the thermostat down even a degree, use less hot water, replace an old boiler, replace furnace filters, insulate your home including the attic, cover air leaks, get an energy audit, use other forms of energy such as solar. Also check your bill to make sure it is not estimated - the problem may be your meter.

Solar is for electricity not heat
How do you insulate?

If you live in NY, you can get a no cost energy assessment. Ask your utility company. In NJ, there's also a no-cost quick home energy checkup. They are not just for low income.

I use Orange & Rockland. This year I paid 86.26936 cents per CCF for gas. Last year this same month I paid only 53.68375 cents per CCF! That's nearly a 62% increase. I used way more last year but paid way less!

Can you do this if you’re renting?

Yes but it might have to be a 2-4 family home. Ask your utility company.
