My recently turned 3 year old was bh just trained and is pretty good at home but very often has accidents in school. Is this normal ?

Yes school is overwhelming and it takes some kids longer to feel comfortable. Does the teacher take him at intervals throughout the day? Most kids need that in the beginning. He might not be ready to ask on his own and he might say no when asked. All normal for many kids.
