Most people I know who go by Ella it’s either their middle name or a nickname for Daniella or Ariella

It’s the name of a tree in Hebrew. Definitely a Hebrew name.
It may also appear in the tanach I think, maybe as the name of a man.

My daughter has an Ella in her class. I was curious so asked her mother about it-- she said she is named after Rebbetzin Ella Soloveitchik a"h of Chicago, the wife of R'Ahron Soloveitchik, zt"l, of Chicago and then of Ramat Beit Shemesh. R'Ahron was a big Talmid Chachom, he was a Rebbe in YU and Rosh Yeshiva of Brisk Chicago.
