I need links for what to buy that will actually keep him occupied for large periods of time

I know pesach is 3 weeks away but I'm already having anxiety

it's just so. many. long hours -- mornings, afternoons, and evenings.

My son is 7, I'm willing to spend on items to keep him busy bc it's pikuach nefesh for me but I need ideas that will actually work

-He LOVES to read graphic novels (but already read most of what library has including dogman, hilo etc etc open to suggestions of series tho)
-He loves playing cars (but already has all the hot wheels stuff)
-Board games are too short to be useful, I'll do 3 rounds of chutes and ladders with him and it's only used up 30 minutes Sad
-Too young for lego; too old for Playmobil he doesn't like it anymore

We have cousins 10 minutes away we can visit for a bit, but that's it. We're home alone first days. Tried inviting people for meals cuz that takes up most of the day but no one is else I know in walkable distance is staying home Sad

So far, I'm thinking we'll walk all the way to Sunset park one afternoon, that's going to take up a long time.

I'm just flummoxed. my brain can't even process how I'm going to handle these upcoming hours and hours and hours.

Are you sure he's too young for Lego? My 6 year old can sit and play with Lego for hours

Does he go to shul? Does he have friends that you can arrange playdates with?

He doesn’t go to shul at all? Why would he be too old for playmobil my 9 year spends hours on it.

He can play outside with neighbors- if you have any?

Go to a different park each day if you’re up to it

How about Magna tiles? Go to a toy store and ask what toy is good for your aged kid

Legos is definitely for a 7 year old.

Invest in more books

7 is definitely not too young for lego. My daughter, also an only child (now almost 15 Smile ) played with lego from probably 4 or 5 years old. 7 is perfect for lego. Why not buy a big bucket of lego and he can try building different things.
What about buying a big puzzle to try with him or a few small ones?
And what about making play dates with other kids in the area, friends or neighbors, as in ask him who he would like to hang out with, call their parent and organize an actual play date. Thats what I did for many years so that my daughter would not be bored on shabbat and chagim.

I was probably about that age when I got my first Lego set. I’ve bought them for 5 year olds before (with their mother’s permission, because you will be the one cleaning up at that age). He might not be too young unless he has fine motor issues.

Here are some other building toys: https://www.lakeshorelearning......D_BwE

Maybe one or two of these and a few new books?

Why do you say that? I know many 5 year olds who are taught to clean up after they finish playing.

Same’ish situation. New playmobil, tons of new books and magazines, and shul are basically our only lifesavers. Snacks too. Once in a while a play date works out.

At 7 he can learn some more complicated, involved board games. My 7 year old can play Monopoly and Risk (ok, still learning Risk), both of which can eat up a nice chunk of the day. Does he like puzzles? A 300 piece puzzle is doable at his age, and also challenging enough to take awhile.

Can you try teaching him some older type board games, they take longer and are way more enjoyable for me. Phase 10 is a card game we like with rummikub types of rules that takes a while and ticket to ride is a favorite, my kids can play it from 6 or 7.
Is there a Jewish library near you? There are tons of Jewish graphic novels if he’s read the secular ones, better if you can borrow because they’re pricey but it you want to buy there are many to choose from.
If you’re looking for a toy, marble run is good for that age but you may need more than one set for it to be really fun.

But to clean up legos? I don’t think I’ve met a 5 year old who would have the patience to pick up tiny Lego pieces strewn about. I also don’t think I’d get legos for any age kid without permission, just like a toy that makes noise. Some moms don’t want to deal with that. But a lego bag or mat is a good idea.

My mother and I fought over cleaning up my legos until I was 10 and she finally just relegated me to a basement room no one else had to go in.

Different parenting then. In my mind 5 years old is old enough to know that when they are done, they will have to clean up their toys. Yes, mommy or daddy can help, but that they will have to clean up. And yes, legos. Why is that different than something else? They played, they have to clean up. This can be taught from an even earlier age. I dont understand why not. Again, with the help of a parent, but the child has to learn that this is something they must do when they finish with their toys.
Not everyone has a basement.

Buy him the circle magazine for yom tov, my kids love it!!! There are some amazing Jewish comic books that my boys love! They’re not cheap, perhaps you can borrow from the library or friends who may have..
In my experience, Lego is age appropriate for a 7 year old, but there are junior sets that he’d FOR sure be able to do without help.. (I have an 8 year old who occasionally asks his older brothers for help when putting together a new set)
Good luck! You’l get thru it! Hopefully the weather cooperates and you can take him to the park

5 year olds can clean up toys. I've never met one who couldn't. I've met parents who coddled kids but not kids who couldn't clean up toys.

Definitely Lego for a 7yo. New playmobil too, will some new sets revive the collection?

In terms of books, there are so many Jewish comics these days that kids love. Ds8 especially loves super agent gizmo. He can also read tin tin for hours on end but I'm sure a lot of it goes over his head.

Is he the type for single player games? My kids like rushhour, gravity maze, kanoodle, and that sudoku type game with colored marbles instead of numbers.

Thank you these look great!

**To the pple asking about why no lego and playmobile

He has 3 playmobile sets -- firetruck, policestation, and a playground. he does still play with the police one with me shabbos sometimes but he's outgrowing it -- he's not such a menchy guy in general he's like a 'bang bang smash destroy with monster trucks" kind of kid

he HATES lego -- he has a bin from a cousin and he'll play a bit. I've showed him kits in Toys4U and he doesn't want Sad I know, it's weird he just says 'no I don't want', when I was his age I would have DIED for a fancy set)

yes! he loves puzzles such a good idea. I forgot about those. I can 'help' him by making piles of pieces that belong together cuz I can't make it with him on yom tov but my husband says he's young enough to still make if he takes them apart. thank you!!
