Why does my iron leave white marks??

I am ironing now with my BRAND NEW iron. It is doing the same thing my old iron used to do. It leaves white marks on dark clothing. PLease help! why does this happen??

You need to put a thin cloth between the clothes and the iron. Steam will take out the white marks.

Run a mix of vinegar and water through it - tip from my mother that worked for me.
