I’ve taken a job as literature teacher in chassidish high school. I’m looking for a squeaky clean book that would interest 9th grade girls. Book should be very educational and high caliber writing. Can’t be related to anything Jewish as per school rules. I really appreciate your help!

Shouldn’t the principal tell you

So just to clarify, Emma would not be appropriate for a chassidish high school because Harriet is described as “the natural daughter of somebody.”

That’s it.

That’s the extent of it.

To Kill A Mockingbird is a beautiful book, but not squeaky clean. It centers around a rape accusation.

Chiming in:(hs principal in Bais Yaakov) Certainly not To Kill a Mocking Bird at all. And not Sep Peace in grade 9. Try Prince and the Pauper, Miracle Worker, Light in the Forest.

I read A Separate Peace in 9th grade (in BYA). We did Light in the Forest in 8th grade and Miracle Worker in 7th.

Other books we read freshman year: Huck Finn, Prince and the Pauper. I also taught in a BY for a few years; I didn’t teach 9th but we did Thunder on Sycamore Street, Lord of the Flies, Macbeth, and Our Town in 10th.

I kill the mocking Bird- Paul Acampora is a cute book but I can't see a chaddish school letting it, I don't know if it has any literary value but it is funny.

Please don't teach Boy in the Stripped Pyjamas. It's such a gross misrepresentation of the Holocaust that the author actually gave a formal apology, after many groups questioned and attacked it.

I remember doing these in school. Probably some were in younger grades.

Maybe Anne of Green Gables? Might have to cross out references to church if that bothers the school.

No way to Anne of Green Gables. Too much church for sure. And Sunday School picnics, and x-mas

So they want no references to s-x, no references to church, AND nothing Jewish?

One of my favorite books we read in high school was The Cellist of Sarajevo. I think it’s pretty short though.

Julius Caesar?
