I asked my son's pediatrician if he should have one - he's 16 months old. The dr said that since he's not in playgroup, he's not exposed as much, so he doesn't think it's necessary. But if I decide I want it, he can get it.
They generally recommend it for children under 2.

my son is not in playgroup either , and I dont' have any other kids who can bring it home. But I do go to exercize with him and there are other kids there, and he now has a bad virus and lost some weight and is not a big kid, so I'm thinking I really don't want him sick again....

Here's what I don't understand, maybe someone could enlighten me:

Since there are about 100 strains of the flu on any given year, and a flu shot only vaccinates against MAYBE 2 strains. How exactly is it supposed to really help?

I've heard answers such as: it can't hurt, it's better than nothing...
I'm not convinced.

the vaccine is against the ones projected to be the most common. it's a gamble. it's recommended for kids 6-23 months

You should also know that if you get another strain, your case is generally milder than if you had no flu vaccine at all.

We were in California two winters ago when there was such a shortage of vaccine, and we had a number of deaths, children and also some older people from the flu.

Influenza used to kill thousands of people every year. In epidemic years, hundreds of thousands. It's not an illness to take chances with.
