Our extended family keeps in touch thru a family blog, updating each other about kids, etc. We are very different on the political spectrum and are currently embroiled in a very heated arguement on the presidential elections.

you should have an option to edit your post/add a poll.
in response to your op, I dont think they should have started with the politics. even with friends I don't talk politics (not that I'm so into it, b'chlal). its not kidai, every aspect is too multi-faceted to convince someone else or change their mind, the only thing you accomplish is making ppl think 'I can't believe she would vote for xyz'.

Oh gosh. My family NEVER discusses politics. It can ruin many a good relationship. We are in totally different places on the national/frum spectrum although we are all frum. it's so much better for shalom when we don't go near politics.
