I have a BA in Psyc. My plan was to go back to school when DH was done with his masters. It took longer than expected plus a joint job and two kids. I know that at some point in the future I will need more earning power (right now I am a SAHM by choice and reality that I can't earn enough to cover daycare). I am considering going back to school --online-- for a Social Work degree.

Has anyone done this? Where? How did it work out?
For those who have a degree in social work can you describe the pros and cons of licensing programs vs non licensing? What specific kind of jobs, hours of work and pay?

I am also open to other carrers as long as I can do it mostly or all online so any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

I am looking at online post-grad study options too. I have also worked at an online education provider. My gosh, some of the stuff I saw at my last job was appalling! I worked to edit and update and correct a stack of courses and my boss was always annoyed I took too long, doing it. But I couldnt not do it, people were paying good money for the course materials and I found real ethical issues with what they were receiving.

All that said, I would give you the following advice based on my experience:

* Go with a recognised university/college that offers courses on-campus as well as online. If not:

* Check their accreditation so you know your piece of paper at the end is worth something.
* Check how long the course takes, whether you can enrol anytime of year, and study at your own pace. Do they have a maximum time frame before they cancel your enrolment, or charge you a fee to re-commence? If it is self-paced, find out what the approx or nominal hours are. Too short and it wont be worth anything.
* Try to get sample course materials.
* Check their assessment policies, the way they grade papers, the type and amount of tuition you will get as an online student. Courses that grade on a pass/fail for example, may not be as readily recognised by other education institutions or savvy employers.

Some online colleges will specialise in specific areas only. In some cases they will have employment set ups. This may be handy for you also. The online course I have settled on has this arrangement. The qualification isnt standard, but its a highly specific field, the only area they do and its got a good duration with an employment stream specific for graduates, with several very big firms hiring straight from the graduate pool.

can you recommend any schools? I see you are in Australia, but perhaps you have heard what is reputable in the US.

I appreciate your outline of issues to investigate.

I'm looking into Walden. It seems to have quite a good reputation and isnt crazy expensive.

I'm in the process (although on a break right now) of dong a degree with the distance learning center of a college in my state (I'm in NY). Online learning is becoming more popular, so you can check out brick-and-mortar schools near you to see if they offer online classes. A word of warning, though- although you can "attend" class any hour you'd like, there are minimum attendance requirements. There's a LOT of reading, too.
I also found that he classes are much more rigorous than I dreamed, very thorough. It can be a great way to learn.

I know that Boston University has an online MSW program and they help you find internships and meet your state's requirements. It's a little more pricey than other programs, but you know it's accredited and you are getting an excellent education.

I am currently a student at Seton Hall University, an established school in NJ. I am in their online School and Professional Counseling program. It is a very rigorous program but I do feel like I'm getting a good education. I think with most online classes there is more reading and writing to do, due to the nature of the way that learning takes place. I am mostly done the classes and will be starting to intern next semester.

I'm in an online speech therapy master's program. I've been happy with the quality of most of the classes. It's a regular, reputable school that also has an online program. Same professors as the campus students have.

Keep in mind that with social work you will have clinical placements (I don't know what they're called in social work) at various places, so being a SAHM once you get to that stage might be difficult.

IME doing an online degree means you have to really stay on top of the reading, because even if your class meets for chat, it's not the same as listening to a lecture. To an extent you're teaching yourself. You need to be organized and self-motivated. I'm not but I'm working on it. Smile

Can you tell us what school?

Also, anyone have audio/visual classes online? I learn better that way.
