We recently had a thread in which we discussed how Jewish women have been willing to even have their children killed al kiddush Hashem (for the sanctification of G-d's name)

What do you think is the one most important thing that a Jewish mother should impart to her children?

For Jewish mothers who could impart only one thing, like in the Holocaust, the one thing was: You are Jewish! Don't forget that!

If you had to choose one thing that your children would never forget.

So for those living under duress, as posted previously, the message is about being Jewish.

For others - I would say the one thing never to forget is "shivisi Hashem l'negdi samid" (I place G-d before me always). G-d is always there, always watching. I am in His presence.

It's only one thing if I count them as a whole (G-d's commands) LOL

Thank you for starting this thread, I really wanted to know the same thing.

My oldest is 10 days away from turning 3, and when he was born my mashpia told me: "the first three years matter the most in Chinuch. whatever you teach him in these three years will stay with him forever."

So I'm 10 days away, and facing the date with trepidation.

What should I cram in before its too late?

I think so far "Shivisi Hashem Lnegdi Samid" is the most important.

So maybe the answer to the same question asked to fathers would be, "Torah tziva lanu Moshe morasha kehillas Yaakov," because this is the first thing a father must teach his son.

You're all kidding!

You mean ...

Nobody is mentioning mamosh THE most important thing????

Haven't you all read Dr. Twerski's books?

Don't you know that THE most important thing is SELF-ESTEEM?

(yes, sarcasm)

motek, responding to your sarcasm -

self esteem is not an idea/concept that you teach, it is a feeling you instill....

I don't think this could be accomplished in 10 days, however, I think Middos is the most important thing. In todays world the only thing that can really make our children grow up to be good people is by teachingg them good middos with us as their role models. They won't want to do anything really wrong if they know that it doesn't befit them. Torah is very important, and it definitely is high up on the list, but you need the middos for the Torah to stay! What else will keep our kids off the streets and getting into trouble besides for the message "it doesn't befit me" "I'm higher than that" and someone that has their character traits in place?
