From what I heard: A child who never learns to crawl is likely to have learning diabilities later on, but most children who crawl on their backsides etc. do eventually learn how to crawl (under tables, playing horsey or doggy (or sheep - if you're Makpid on Kosher animals)) and then it's not a problem.

My friend told me about a women who until the age of 20 had learning diabilities. She had never learned to crawl. Part of her therapy was to learn to crawl, and supposedly that helped her in her other problems.

I have a bit of knowledge of earlychildhood development,

one thing is when a child has gros motor difficulites not cognitive but motor and especailly gross motors, they investigate to see if the child crawled as a baby, in some cases that is what hapened, and then they make that child go back in his development and make him cralw

gross motor skills have nothing to do with cognitve skills.
if some one has cognitve difficulties he may be delayed with his motor skill but not the other way around.

and if you ask me to quote my sources I can't be I took and still am taking early childhood development and I am sure I learned this.

(but I might be wrong)

while crawling, child developes:

coordination of right/ left front/back, which takes some skill

developes fine motor skills - hand, fingers

developes numerous muscles

If any of these are not developed, child might seem to be 'disabled', when in fact he is just 'under developed', so to say, or rather has unused potential; and all he needs is to learn to crawl properly

Proud, I'm going to look that up. thanks Smile

Proudmom and zun - never crawled? I mean, not even at five or six years old while playing around?

well, last week (tues/wed?) I wrote my 7 1/2 month old doesn't crawl...well, guess what he surprised me with on Thursday????
I wanted to see if he could if he wanted to! I put a toy a few feet away and he extended his arms and pulled his body after it! Hooray for him!! He still prefers to sit upright or stand holding on, but I'm trying to put him on his belly sometimes so he'll get moving. (Time to baby proof the house!)
