Once a child can reliably keep the thermometer under his tongue and his mouth closed for the whole time, you can use an oral thermometer which is almost as accurate as a rectal. This usually happens around 4-5 years old, depending on the child. The truth is that if I'm seeing a patient, even a teenager, and I really need an accurate temp, I just do a rectal.

I'm a pediatrician. I don't usually take rectal temps in teens, but in certain cases the degree of fever can help with diagnosis so in those cases I might take it rectally.

Just to update y'all, I called a rov who said to try to get kosher medicines and if I can't to call him back...
So so far I found out that Infant TYLENOL plus cold/cough is kosher. As is tri-vi-sol (so I can't be cheap and buy the no name brand...).
Now I'm just trying to find out if there's a cold/cough medicine without tylenol that's kosher...how about infant motrin?? If anyone knows, please help - thanks!
