Is this name used at all nowadays? I love the meaning and using this very historical name. I don't know if it would be too unusual of a name though. DH wants to only use "traditional" names. Opinions?

Well, there's Rabbi Gamliel Rabinowitz. So you know that it should be acceptable in all circles.

I say go for it if you like it]. There are so many perfectly good Tannaitic and Amoraitic names that go unused. It was also the middle name of a US president. A very scandalous president, but still some chashivus there.

I'd say go for it but only if DH is ok with it. If he feels it's not traditional enough for him, probably not worth trying to convince him based on a bunch of amothers saying it's traditional enough...

Not to worry, OP, unless you plan to call him Gamayliel (phonetic spelling).

My dh has a friend Gamliel (yeshivish/lite charedi parents).

The name was always used "sometimes".
