Eating paper and cardboard. What does it mean?

My one year old has been eating paper, cardboard and all these non-food items.

Isn't he supposed to know the difference between real food and other things by now??

Is it really bad if he swallows and eats this stuff? I try to avoid it but sometimes it's impossible to...

I remember hearing it can g-d forbid be a sign of missing nutrients. Anyone know anything about that?

Thanks.

Eating non-food items can sometimes be a sign of an iron deficiency, which is not uncommon at 1 yr old and why (at least in Israel) they routinely screen for iron-deficiency anemia at this age. You probably should check with the doc, but I wouldn't call it a "g-d forbid" situation; it is easily remedied through balanced nutrition and iron drops.

Of course, if your child has always been orally inclined, putting everything within reach in his mouth he might not have outgrown that yet and is just able to reach more of a variety of interesting new things that he couldn't reach before.

My niece used to eat paper. They did a blood test and discovered that she was very low on iron. Since she takes iron now, she no longer eats paper.

Take you child for a blood test to check iron levels.

I know someone with a child with this problem who has Pica. She finds she can often satisfy him with hard bread end pieces or crusty bagels.
