It's believed to be a Yiddishization of "Tzarina" - so the Hebrew equivalent would be Malka. We have a couple of kids' books by a Malka Charna!

In Polish, it means black. literally. It's is the feminine form.

As in, a black cow would be 'charna krowa' (krowa is cow..obviously)

It's not a poetic or descriptive word for black, like 'ebony'... it's a common everyday Polish word.

Ruchel could well be right - my interpretation is handed down many times, not from "real" research LOL.

Hi writermom!

It is possible Tzarina also existed. After all there was Koenigin and Reine, there is Reyna, there is Sultana...

Dislike the name. Why would someone name their child dark?
There are many names for light in Hebrew, but haven't heard of any for dark till now.
I'm not fond of this either but Schwartz means the same thing- black

Oh name guru: is Shterna the same as Sterna?

And the amother right above me: really? You can't say that, nothing personal, but you don't care for a name, without hiding? Just wow.

Melanie, Breina, Breindel, Bruno... All classics in very Various circles, all dark.

Shterna = Sterna Wink

I am glad to learn that Breina is not, as I thought when I first had the name, related to "brains".

My daugher's name is Charna Leah. I know a few Charnas and they all very lovely so the name has good vibes for me. But we mostly call her Leah because that's what everyone calls their daughters named after this grandmother and I also love the name Leah.
