I need to make a cake 4 dh b-day, I need a recepie that is known not to flop and any easy decorating tips will b helpful!
I dont have a kitchen aid so I have to make the cake by hand...

1 c. water
1 c. oil
2 c. sugar
3 c. flour (if you use all-purpose flour, add 3 tsp. baking powder & 3 tsp. salt)
4 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
Mix it all up and bake at 350 for 40 - 50 minutes. Makes a 9x13 (pyrex size) tray, or 2 8" rounds, or 24 cupcakes...
Icing is harder to mix up by hand, although I have done it. I do a cup shortening (Crisco) to 3 cups icing sugar, 2 tbsp. water, and 1 tsp. vanilla. Or you can get the Wilton or Cake Mate icing tubes (OU, I think) and decorating tips. Duncan Hines also has a ready made icing, but I think it's dairy (also OU, not cholov yisrael).

Without a mixer, I'd use cake mix. For frosting, I'd buy a tub of marshmallow fluff or chocolate spread or ready made cream (Bakers Choice makes them). For decorations, go with Wilton. They have all kinds off stuff. check out their website for ideas.

I made a pound cake with a hand mixer for my dhs bday and made my own choc icing, it came really yummy and I do not bake, so I was pleasently suprised how good it came out.

on the back of hercheys cocoa they have a recipe for chocolate cake, it is no fail and you do not need a mixer. good luck
