Q. Is vanilla from Mexico and the Caribbean dangerous?
A. Coumarin, which was usually found in vanilla from Mexico and the Caribbean countries until recently can be dangerous in large quantities as it has been found to cause liver cancer in laboratory animals. Coumarin has been banned in the United States since the early 1950s. Much of the so-called vanilla extract from Mexico no longer has coumarin in it. It may, however, have red dyes which are banned for use in the United States. |
Please define 'large quantities"... I generally use it a tablespoon at a time.

I don't think a tablespoon is a lot....it's for a whole cake or several portions of "something", right?

I though a teaspoon or two is efficient - but I stopped buying the real vanilla - it once ruined a pie I made cause it tasted like pure alcohol instead of vanilla. Why would I spend so much when I don't like the taste

Vanillin is an "artificial" flavoring used in many foods to provide a sweet vanilla-like taste. Vanillin is synthetically derived from vanilla extract, which is drawn from the plant, the Vanillan Planifolia.
Vanillan is the imitation vanilla. It's only benefit is price. It is more unhealthy than the vanilla bean and vanilla extract. You are not avoiding the vanilla plant by using imitation vanilla.

I was guessing that coumarin was an addive that was banned in the US but is still used in Mexico and Carribean countries and that it can still be imported. Just check where your Vanilla extract comes from, it should say on the container.

Corn syrup has hidden MSG and we cannot have MSG.

I dont think making your own vanilla extract would save you $$$....around here one skinny little vanilla bean costs at least 8 dollars
There's nothing like the real thing, though. Its yum! I have a tiny bottle and use it sparingly, when it will really count, otherwise I use imitation.
liveand learn, I had no idea that corn syrup had MSG in it!! Thats so weird!
