Many raincoats come with belts, and I see not everyone uses them.

Some tie them behind the raincoat..what is that all about; do they actually think it's slimming? I assume they do so b/c they don't want to lose it..but why, if they never use it?

And for Shabbos, forget about it.

I don't mean to be - if you need to wear a Shabbos belt with keys on it, it's a problem with a belt already on your raincoat..........

And, if you tie the belt behind you, you don't need it and it's technically "carrying" on Shabbos!

I understood that, and meant funny in a positive way.

is it really considered carrying if it's tied behind the back?

Not carrying at all, it’s tied (same for hankies tied around your neck). But anyway, in the days that I used to wear a ‘rain coat’ I took off the belt completely. I am too chunky for a belt and leaving in the back made it bounce as a walked, not very flattering. The point of it in the back is to add ‘style and distraction’, at least for the days when I was doing that.

I can tie a pocketbook around my hand?

It has to be a knot, and not dangling loose – basically a part of you. Now you’re getting into halacha so please ask your rav. But what will be inside that pocketbook if not muktza things? Q-tips and chocolate?

I don't think it's so simple, WithHumor, but I don't know enough to knock what anybody's learned.
