People seem to be forgeting that there are so many jobs out there that you can make over $200K a year w/o a degree. For example, I know many people in real estate who are pulling in at least half of a million a year and never stepped foot in college. It is all about your outlook, if you think that you can't and never will make so much money, then you never will. And to me 200 is nothing. I don't know how people live on that.

that was really really funny, good one amother.

If you pay full tuition for four kids, have two cars, which, yes is a necessasity, and serve your kids good nutritious meals not only pasta, plus buy your kids clothes, send them to camp and live like all the jews out there live except w/o any programs, that you are totally reliant on yourself, then you need more than 200k. This is before any vacations or going out to eat or buying nice stuff for your house or your kids.

why is two cars a necesiety. for most, one car is a necesity, two is a luxury. you dont sound like the most average person on here ,so we are clashing with your ideals.

200k is not nothing.

If a husband goes to work in one car, then what should a wife do, sit home a whole day? Who is supposed to pick up the kids from school, shop, etc.? Now everyone lives in crown heights where everything is walking distance, there are other places that people live.
You are telling me that I am not average bec. I don't think people shouldn't go on programs and that they should try and support themselves, then I feel bad for you. A person't goal should be to be fully independant, and that is from the gov't too. I don't want to end up like the blacks on welfare sitting at home doing nothing, waiting for my welfare check so that I can buy my groceries for the week. If that is your goal then good for you.

I think that tuition is actually enacting a form of socialism in the Jewish community. Everyone feels that they have nothing b/c they are paying out similar percentages in tuition, even if the amounts aren't the same. My neighbor is paying over $60K in tuition for their kids. It's more than many people make in a year!

Wow 200K Drunken Smile ..If only....

There are certain things that are necessities and certain things that are luxuries. Having 2 cars is a luxury not a necessity. What did my parents do when we were kids? It was UNHEARD of to have 2 cars. Now it is expected. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have two cars. But I'm not kidding myself that it is an extra expense that is NEEDED.
And please, don't tell me that there are only 2 ways to feed your kids, unhealthy and cheap (like pasta) and expensive and nutritious. There is a middle ground! You can feed your kids nutritious food while still being money conscious. You don't need to be feeding your kids strawberries in the winter and out of season, when a carton costs like $10. There are nutritious foods found in the winter time and nutritious foods found in the summer time, you just have to be smart about it.
If you live on 200K and spend like you are living and 500K, then no, 200K will not be enough. If you live on 100K and spend like you living on 100K you will be fine. With tuition and everything today, you are never going to feel "rich" unless you are making millions of dollars. Everyone always feels stretched. Certain people are always going to look at their neighbors and see their cars, and their vacations, and not be happy with what they have. If that is you, then yea, 200K is not going to be enough. If you make do with you have and make the best of your situation and don't at your neighbor and try to spend as if you are making the same as them, then you will have a completely different attitude.

Give amother a break!

People from different communities have different expenses! ..and I totally relate to having a husband who's a professional, makes a nice salary but it goes straight to student loans, tuitions, rent (yes, RENT! we cannot afford to buy a home), and some vital medical expenses that aren't covered by insurance. Truth be told- we would have done much better if husband was not a prof. and we qualified for scholarships, sect 8s, childhealthplus, and whatever else is out there...

In passing, some neighbors and I were chatting about taxes and waiting for the refund...I made a joke(not so funny!)about how we probably OWED the govt money..My neighbor looked at me and said "..and what tax bracket are YOU in?" b/c pple do shtick (and live a whole LOT better than we do!)

that's just one reason of many to be "dan l'kaf zchus"...
