Hi. My brother's wedding will be in a few months. For the first few family weddings we (sisters of chosson/kallah) rented gemach gowns. As we get older and with more kids, it becomes really difficult to find a good fit in the right color at a gemach, esp if you want something that you like. For one wedding we bought from David's Bridal but found even with matching shells it wasn't the same as a gown. For the upcoming we want to consider buying (such as from David's Bridal) and then building up the gown to be tznius. I'm wondering if anyone here has done that that can say how it worked for them and what pricing are we looking at? Otherwise, can anyone recommend a gemach that specifically carries plus sizes? TIA.

I did that for my brother's wedding a couple of years ago. I bought a gown at David's Bridal along with 2 matching scarves/shawls. I had a seamstress build up the dress using the scarves. They had to be lined of course. The trick is to pick a dress that won't be instantly identifiable as a built-up. You need to pick a style that has a line or fold that the seamstress can attach the new material to without a visible seam.

depending on who the seamstress is - the price range can easily vary ... think $50 - $200
