For those who keep chalav yisrael...does powdered milk need to be chalav yisrael, or is ou-d (or similar) okay? I have read conflicting things.
If so, where does one find it?

dh and I took on to keep c"y but not powdered milk.
most people do tho.
after a few years we found out things like most chocolate bars are made with powdered milk

Some pple who keep cholov yisroel exclude the following:
Butter,
Powder Milk,
Whey.
Today, there are so many cholov yisroel products that most pple who are makpid just keep it all. (Not me. I check ingredients.)

I don't know about powdered milk, but butter can only be made from milk of a kosher animal/cow supposedly so it does not need to be CY. Years ago people who only drank cy milk bought regular butter but nowadays I think that is less common.

While years ago it was true that butter didn't need to be cholov yisroel, it is no longer the case at least in the US as there are other things added to it now (maybe whey, I'm not sure) which do need to be cholov yisroel.

Rav Schlesinger wrote a whole book on the butter.
Some also keep CY except for the kids/babies/under BM.

We spoke to our rav before we took on chalav yisroel and were told NO chalav stam powdered milk, YES chalav stam butter.
So it depends. I had no problem buying chalav yisroel, but we buy breakstone instead.

Most butters contain whey and some also have artificial colors that are questionable.
DH is strictly CY, but he says that if butter is 100% pure, then you can take it. Where I live, CY butter is 4x as expensive as stam. Thank goodness for Horizon Organics!

But coloring is a question of kashrut, period, not CY or CS...
Most American butters contain "flavoring," which is lactic acid. (I have Land O'Lakes in my freezer.)
