I cut his fingernails when he is sleeping, but it's not so easy to cut his toenails when he is sleeping (because he wears footies to sleep, or socks during the day and will wake up if I take them off etc etc, and also because his toes are not as easily accessible as his fingernails are)

But if I try when he is awake, he kicks and squirms and it is impossible.

Please help!

Ask the ped.

He may not need to sleep in footsies. Or at least not for the one night when you intend to cut the toenails.

You also may not need to cut the toenails yet at all.

I heard to soak them? They get softer in water? Does that mean doing it in the bath? Not sure here.

Usually at that age you can just have him lying down on the bed and you firmly grasp his foot while you cut. If he's very wiggly you can have someone else hold him, and you just hold the foot and cut.

clippers are easier to use than scissors, imo

DH prefers clippers, I prefer scissors. In my house toenail cutting is a two person job (with the child usually not too happy about it), with one person holding down and the other doing the 'snipping' Smile. Trying it while sleeping if the socks are off (lets say for a nap) is definitely worth a shot, although if you say your baby would wake up from socks being taken off then he'd probably wake up from nail cutting.

Good luck! This is one of those 'it's hard to be a mommy' moments! and FTR my kids toenails are not as short as they should be since this stresses me out lol
