For every degree closer to the outdoor temp that you leave your thermostat, you save apx 5% of your electric/gas bill. So in a Miami summer where our bills were coming out to $500 a month for keeping the house at 70 degrees, changing the temp to 74 saves us about $100 per month (and trust me, when you are coming in from hundred degree heat and 100% humidity, 74 feels freezing.)

In the winter, we try to tough it out, and usually only have to turn on the heat for one week of the year.

78 degrees and 76 on shabbos. I figure shabbos we are in the house all day so we want it very cool.

LubCoralSprings, are you sure? If we set our ac at anything above about 73 deg, we're better off opening our windows!

yep, SURE! In FL you set the temperature at 78 or 76. If we set our thermostat at 71 we'd have an huge AC bill. Floridians don't keep their ac so low!

for us, keeping the temp in the low 70's IS a big bill, for sure, but it's awfully warm to keep it higher!
