Davida wrote: | Wow if this thread has shown me anything it's that people have such different tastes! A lot of the names mentioned, especially the Yiddish ones, are ok but I never thought prole actually picked them and liked them. I assumed pple gave them out of duty or to make their families happy. Very enlightening!
I like elisheva, naomi (hebrew pronunciation, I don't like when people sneak a yud as if it was nayomi), avigail, talia, sophia, liora, avital, adira, ella... |
Nayomi is the secular way of pronouncing the name Naomi. Think Naomi Judd. It's not adding a 'yud'.

Ela/Ella
I just loooove the name. I knew two people who have the name and both are amazing.
I cant choose it for my daughters, cos we name after family members and there were ancestors of ours with this name as far as I know.

We also name for family members that passed on. But I never understood it.... why cant parent of child pick a name that they like or is meaningful to them. Thats what was done in bibical times. Yaakov didnt name any of his sons avraham or yitzchok, and his daughter was dina not sarah or rivka... a child was names for a situation , like
Reuvain - behold, a son
Shimon - to be heard
Leivi - joined/attached
Yehuda - praised
And so on....
My mother named my sister a name that she loved
By sister had a girl and named her a name thst was meaningful to her at the time.
My mother was livid that my sister didnt name the baby after her own sister who passed away from lukimia...
Never gonna win
