you can do individual salad trifles. get those clear plastic cups on a little stand.
shred in the food processor - purple cabbage, carrots, zucchini...chop pepper, cucumber, etc...basically any veg you want. layer in the cups, pour salad dressing over, and just put on the table. colours look great layered together, and people will mix it up themselves if they want.

cherry tomatoes, avocado and hearts of palm?

Susie fishbein has lots of fancy salads, but be aware most of them are full of sugar.

As long as it looks good and tastes good, why does it need to be fancy?

People like lettuce salads with fruits and nuts. ....ppl like everyday salads, too, like slaw - okay, you can fancy up slaw - and potato salad; which you can fancy up using red potatoes.

You can make a rice or o rzo salad if you want something different.

KBD and both of the kosher palette cookbooks have great salads...you can reduce the sugar in the dressings, they are usually way too sweet!

Some of my faves:

-spinach, mango, red onion and almonds with a balsamic-oil-sugar dressing
-romaine & tomato & cuke, olives, red onion with a mayo-salsa dressing and tortilla chips on top

can't think now of any others..post-fast brain freeze Tongue Out

young mommy - I like your idea of the trifle salad. I may do it in a big trifle dish, that might look pretty. What dressing would you recommend for a salad like that?

I know somebody who makes a trifle salad in a big dish and they use mayo as dressing.

This is an amazing salad, and u can use it for whenever.. it is fleishigs, so be sure to know if the vort will be fleishigs..

chef salad

romaine lettuce
snow peas
any other veggie u wanna put in...

dressing

1/4 c. sugar
2 tsp soy sauce
3, 4 crushed garlics
4 Tb. oil
3 Tb vinegar
drop of water
3 Tb apple juice

then u can add either turkey or pastrami in it.
if I would want to make it milchigs, I would add feta cheese and grape tomatoes, black olives... the suace is deeeelicious!!

I would use a thousand island dressing (gives another shade of colour), or if really short on time, bottled italian dressing. Would definitely work in a large trifle bowl as well.
