NOVEL: I haven't read this book but heard great things about it "the Bamboo Cradle" it's what I hope to actually read this summer. Lovely story of a chinese girl who was adopted by (I think or maybe a little later became) frum family. Today she is frum etc.

The, "Bamboo Cradle" was written by Dr. Avraham Schwartzbaum. He is the administrator of Neve Yerushalayim Yeshiva. I have heard him speak about his experience. He didn't exactly go looking to adopt a child but you can read about that. In the process of adopting the child and trying to convert her the family became frum.

I have met the woman too. At the time the whole family was living in Israel. She is now married with children of her own.

I don't mean to be cynical- but why post as amother to suggest Harry Potter?????????????????

I read the first book and loved it. The creativity was phenominal, and I found the book to be squeaky clean. Despite having enjoyed the first book, I am not pulled to read further within the series.

Curious whether the author has kept further versions as clean, despite harry growing older and reaching 'the age.'

I have wondered the same thing. I believe that the author has said that there will be 'a bit' of romance for Harry in this upcoming novel.

Oh, and 'amother' - I'll own up to having read all of the prior ones and am planning on reading this one.

I also plead guilty to having read all of the books (not the new one). They are definitely not as clean as the first one, but not terrible.

Another HP fan here. I read them all and I'm looking forward to the next. but they are getting a bit too long! I heard this one is shorter than the last.
they are pretty clean.
anyone pre-order #6? I'll wait to borrow it from someone who did (or the library)

I am on page 155 of the new Harry Potter! It's good, but not as good as some of the others. My favorite is #3. I keep up with the books, but never read them more than once.

I havent had a chance to buy the new HP yet.

Here is what I read this summer and have enjoyed:

The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime

The time travelers wife

The unbearable lightness of being

the nazi officer's wife

All of Nick Hornby's books but especially About a Boy

Anyone else have good suggestions? I am running out of material and I still have a few weeks before school starts again. Never anytime to read enjoyable books once school starts.

I liked this book a lot, it was very different!

I tried the first HP and never got into it; however my husband has read all and is eagerly awaiting reading the latest.

I did some reading this summer, will have to think if there is anything worthwhile to recommend. I usually just read the books and forget them.

Did anyone read the new R' Tatz book, called Letters to a Buddhist Jew?
I just started it and it's a little weird- I'm reading all these buddhist ideas. I checked the book and there are no rabbinic haskamos (approbations) at the beginning. I find that strange because his other books do have haskamos (from BIG rebbeim!).

I loved that book! It broadened my thinking into new dimensions.

Here are some other books that I found enjoyable and "mind-broadening" in some way:

The Dandelion Clock (fiction)

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (it's fiction, but really philosophy)

Constantine's Sword (non-fiction)

The Little Drummer Girl (fiction. warning: takes "Palestinian" perspective)

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (fiction)

Anyone read any of these books?

I started zen and art of motercycle maintainence years ago - and I guess I never finished it. I still remember the beginning about how he takes trips with his family on motorcycles. I will take your list of books to the library with me. Anyone who appreciates the unbearable lightness of being probably has the same taste in books as I do.
