I started zen and art of motercycle maintainence years ago - and I guess I never finished it. I still remember the beginning about how he takes trips with his family on motorcycles. I will take your list of books to the library with me. Anyone who appreciates the unbearable lightness of being probably has the same taste in books as I do.

yeah, zen is LONG and at least the copy I had, had tiny print all squashed together. it took me a few weeks of reading it in little chunks. I thought it was worth the effort, because he says things that I have never seen anywhere else, even a whole new "vocabulary" to think in. (unbearable lightness is like that too, although they are not similar in other ways.)

I'd be interested to hear what you think of the other books on my list! I liked them all for very different reasons.

do you like the real "modern" books like john delillo?

Also The Covenant by Naomi Ragen is very good.

Harry Potter - I'm a fan too!

I read zen and the art of motocycle maintenance in high school and did not like it at all. maybe I was too young to appreciate it though. I remember my best friend LOVED the perks of being a wallflower and she's a writer/in publishing now, so I'm sure it's very good.

Im reading "long way down" by Nick Hornby now. It seems ok but I think high fidelity and about a boy are his best.

I read "Perks of Being a Wallflower" and found it really good, but really really odd.

I also read "The Nazi Officer's Wife" and really enjoyed that. It was an amazing story and gave me a lot to think about.

I enjoyed "The DaVinci Code." It was really fast-paced and kept me from falling asleep while nursing my newborn. :-)

I really liked the book, In the Image, by Dara Horn

also, I thought Seven Blessings by Ruchama King was good, but not everyone I know has cared for it (this has a frum theme, but is not published by a frum publisher)

I tried to read a book by Nick Hornby, but couldn't get into it - it was the one with 2 wedding bands on the cover (forgot the name)

when I get it from my mother Smile it's a quarterly journal, a Jewish Reader's Digest
has some nice things, some mediocre things ...

books:

Chicken Soup books - I'm finishing Mother's Soul II now, some very special pieces in there

Terrorist Hunter: The Extraordinary Story of a Woman Who Went Undercover to Infiltrate the Radical Islamic Groups Operating in America

Here's another book that I thought was really good, and would probably be called "odd" too:

The Reader
by Bernhard Schlink, translated by Carol Brown Janeway

more troubling than entertaining.

and another book that is DEFINITELY odd. I read this a long time ago. I don't know if I would really reccomend it, in fact I would not, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever read it or even heard of it? It is called "the conformist", and it was translated from italian.

I recently read "the blessings of a broken heart" by sherrie mandel. she is the mother of kobi mandell, one of the 2 boys killed in a cave in israel. the book is hard on the emotions, but beautiful too.
