I've also been researching this lately. Top rated anti-virus includes BitDefender, Avira, Eset, Webroot, and Hitman Pro, with some also recommending Norton and Kaspersky. They're all around $20-$40 a year. If serious hackers are targeting you, I don't think any of them will be able to save you, and if not, combined with some basic common sense, I think any of them will do the job.

I got avira but am really not happy with it. Currently looking into getting something else.

We've had both Kaspersky and BitDefender and been very happy with both.
