There are so many wonderful areas in California - I agree with the above poster that it depends on what you want to do.

Lake Tahoe is a beautiful area with hiking and boating activities.

SF is a diverse and wonderful city, with easy access to great hiking, redwood forests and cute smaller towns to explore. Wine country is beautiful and a great place to bike around (if you ride). Also whale watching tours when in season.

The coast is breathtaking throughout the state. There are beautiful national and state parks - in the mountains, desert, on the coast and in between.

Outside of LA and SD food is pretty limited but doable with planning. Also Chabad had a good presence in many areas.

Let us know what type of trip you're interested in. I am happy to make recommendations. I am partial to Northern California and the sierras.

We will like to have convenience of kosher food and minyan. So I think we are better off staying around LA. We are willing to travel a little every day.

There are minyanim farther north. Plan your day around them to get a fuller tour. The Bay Area has a few shuls. Find out which ones have daily minyanim and the times so you could plan accordingly. There may be a seasonal minyan in wine country.
Palm Spring has a nice community.
Basically, there are Jews outside of LA.

Drive to Oxnard (about an hour from LA) and do wine tasting at Herzog winery. They also have a fab resrurant - Tierra Sur.
