Hi, ok so in our house we all take off our shoes as soon as we come in. I like that policy
however I have a few problems with it:
1) The front area ends up looking like a huge mess!
It's a jumble of shoes. 2 adults, 4 kids. And at times it ends up being more than one pair a person. For example a kid will wear her school shoes and then come home, put on crocs to play outside...or sneakers, or whatever..It ruins the look of the room (which is anyway usually a wreck. but still.
2) because theres so much shoes it takes a while sometime for a kid to find their shoes because they go under the couch. Basically the front door opens right next to the couch so the shoes are taken off right there. The couch doesnt go to the floor so things get pushed under there easily.

If you have a rule of taking off shoes at front door, what do you do?

I was thinking of a standard shoe rack. Like with two shelves or something..I don't really know if thats a good idea though. Does anyone have something like this?
Maybe a cubby kind of rack, and then theres a bench to sit on on top?
any tips, ideas?
I don't want something too big because it's a small living room and small apt in general.

thanks!!

my friend has an ikea shoe rack its slim and close to the wall. I like that it would hopefully prevent the younger kids taking and throwing the shoes around. I currently have a cubby but they never wind up in there

I found a great shoe rack at Target. It's small and has two shelves. That means you get three layers of shoes- top, middle, bottom. It's not big either so takes up a little room just.

Do you have any furniture in the front of your house? You can use an under furniture shoe holder.

my sister has a nice wicker basket by her front door. All shoes are thrown in and its perfect. No shoes are ever found out of the basket and there is no shoe clutter anywhere.

How many kids do you have?
If you have a lot of shoes and pretty soon boots too then you need a much bigger shoe rack. I recommend using a storage shelf unit with adjustable shelves.
This way you can make the shelves the right height for shoes and then some shelves taller for boots.
You get tons of storage space because it goes high and takes up very little floor space.

I bought this a couple of months ago to leave by the front door to address the same problem you have. Absolutely love it!

Thanks all! Have to go through all these ideas. Hanging something to the wall is not gonna work for us. Really no space for that.

Wicker basket sounds good, but I wonder if than finding shoes in the morning will be so frustrating. I could just imagine a kid flinging out shoe after shoe till he finds his own all the way at the bottom! And obviously not put them back.

I am not shabbatiscoming's sister, but I too have a wicker basket by the front door. It is a wide, not very deep rectangle. It usually ends up piled way too high, but everyone finds their shoes easily.
