Would you give a baby a name that was a relative (parent or sibling)'s middle name? As a first name or as a middle name?

Right, the ashkenazi custom is not to name a child the same name as a live parent or grandparent.

Although I am ashkenazi I always thought naming for a live person was a lovely idea and with my mother's okay I am giving my next daughter her middle name and calling her by it.

Does it matter whether or not I'm naming after someone? For example naming him after dh's grandfather if my fathers middle name was the same, or something of the sort?

If you are Ashkenazi I would defiantly ask a shaila before you do it. I wanted to use a name naming it after a relative and mom had same name never used it and I was told I can't.

I wouldn't for a parent's name and would ask a shaila for a siblings name

Ask your father how he feels about it. Perhaps he rarely uses his middle name and will not mind.

Parent no - customary not to, amongst ashkenaizim. Sibling yes.
What's the shaila - there are families where everyone's named after the same relatives so they all have the same names. It's done all the time. I know families with 25 Esti's and 30 Moishy's.
If anything, I'd ask the sibling themselves if they don't mind having their name re-used.
