which brings me to my question: I have a dinner party at my house the next evening (15 aug), also the first day back in school.
what am allowed to prepare on 14 august, for that first day of school, and for the dinner party in the evening?

I never heard of that. We always wash dishes and clean up after chatzos. In fact, it is/was the minhag of Sephardic women to do a major housecleaning after chatzos, because Moshiach was/will be born on that day. And he might just come Tisha B'Av afternoon too, so better be ready!

If you are looking for a yummy but different tasting kugel,
there is a really good corn kugel recipe in "kosher by Design" cookbook. I like is cold although it is also good hot.

BEFORE shab I make cheese latkes and zucchini latkes/kugel. Eat it room temp.
I mash can of chickpeas (no liquid) with mayo , salt pepper..great smeared on challah. With tomato slice on top.
Egg salad and vegetable salad, cold fruit soup, avocado guacamole also great..
Grapes and watermelon. Lots of water or gatorade
Have an easy fast!
