I am trying to figure out what my great grandfathers Yiddish name could have been. My father says it is tomkin that makes no sense since that is an English nickname for Thomas .... he apparently went by Thomas in America after they moved here from Russia.. any ideas? I saw 1 internet source for tonchen/Tonkin but I have no idea what that means if it’s a Russian name with any Yiddish roots. Any ideas anyone?

Can you read his matzeiva?

If someone has his kesuba you will know.

Otherwise, you can't really guess what his parents named him....

How did your grandfather get called up to the Torah?

How about your father?

Aish says
"Tanchum means "consolation." The name Tanchum appears in the Talmud as a great sage who lived in Babylon."

Look at this
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_(name)

ETA: Google hebrew name for Thomas. Quite interesting. You may not need to change anything.
