I have a growing buiness B"H doing residential and kitchen design in the Baltimore area (and also sell kitchen cabinets). By far the best advertising for me has been word of mouth, from clients and also from contractors and a local interior designer. But word of mouth takes time.

I do limited other advertising:

• An ad in the Baltimore Eruv List, a printed frum phone directory that comes out once a year. People have to be able to find me easily. I have a current client from that ad.

• An advertorial in the yearly home improvement edition of one of the local frum magazines, WhereWhatWhen. Since the time my yearly advertorial printed there a few months ago, I have received one or 2 inquiries specifically mentioning designing for the elderly or people with special needs — Living in Place is a certification I wrote about.

• A website and a houzz.com page — the reviews there are very helpful because people look there for confirmation that I do a good job. I get an occasional client directly from houzz — often not Jewish.

The majority of my clients have heard my name from 2 or 3 people, or from one person and then they read the reviews on houzz. About 90% of my business is repeat or referral.

I totally agree. After a certain point, they will sustain you.

I had a business a number of years ago. I kept lists of where my clients came from. Most came from expensive regional advertising. I would spend $7000 on a big advertisements and get 7 times the revenue back every time. The advertisement looked like a newspaper article. I also did public speaking which brought in clients. Writing for professional publications is helpful to bring in clients and cement relationships.

I dont own a business but word of mouth is definitely your best way. When I was looking for a shaitel macher I asked my friend who she uses...I am looking for a house now and I asked a friend who recently bought a house who they used as a broker...

Thanks everyone! Great points!

I'm a resume writer and my clients have been very happy with my work and referred me to others but since I'm starting out, like Rubber Ducky said, just referrals/ word of mouth won't sustain the business so I guess I'm looking for the most effective means after what I already have...

Regular well written advertising consistently in the same publication. You could use testimonials from clients. They should not be written by you.

Have you put up your cards at local colleges.

Squishy, you are very on target!
I will look into advertising in a publication. I have some great testimonials I can work with.
I also just had an ad made up for seminaries (I live in Israel)

I'm looking for a creative resume writer. Like completely out of the box. Is that up your alley? If yes, I would look at some resumes you've written, and decide if your style suits me.

Yes, very much so! Email me at applyjobofferonline@gmail.com and I'd be glad to send you some samples and hear more about what you're looking for.

I've also done bio's in different writing styles, if you'd like to see those as well.
