Shiffy is pulling my skirt. Yaakov is wailing in his highchair. Chaim wants to know when he is getting his prize. Tova is shouting over everyone, “I don’t LIKE chicken. I want PIZZA.” It’s 5:30 pm and supper is not ready. Yitzy will be walking in the door any minute. My head is spinning and a flood of frustration, tears and anger surges up from within. What’s wrong with me? I can’t do this. What’s wrong with them?

What I think and feel and what I do next depends on many things: my inborn temperament, my history until now, and most of all, my current skill set.

I cannot change my genes. I cannot change my history. I CAN learn how to manage my feelings and behaviors.

DBT Skills Classes can Help!

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills are a set of tools for managing emotions and behaviors. These skills are helpful for a wide range of situations, from day-to- day stresses, all the way to severe emotional dysregulation.

DBT skills training is divided into four modules:

Mindfulness – Learn to be aware and present in the moment. This helps with gaining control over your mind and emotions instead of them controlling you. This is a core set of skill in DBT which is needed for all of the other skills.

Distress tolerance- Skills to use when you are in emotional crisis so that you don’t act impulsively and do something that is not beneficial or is harmful. These are crisis survival skills and acceptance skills to manage intense emotions in the moment.

Emotion Regulation- Education about how emotions work; reducing vulnerability to emotions overall; and changing emotions. These are skills that help with becoming less sensitive and more tolerant to emotional reactions over time.

Interpersonal Effectiveness- Effective communication - How to ask for something or say no; while maintaining the relationship; and while maintaining your self-respect.

DBT skills are generally learned in a DBT skills group.

We are The DBT Skills Center of Ocean County

We offer:

Standard DBT skills groups –24 weekly, 1 ½ hour group sessions. Daytime and Evening groups available (currently all groups are women only). $50/week

Advanced DBT skills group – For those who have completed any standard DBT skills program. Meets twice monthly. $75/month

Specialized individual and group DBT skills training (Couples; Family and Friends; Mothers with ADHD; etc.)

Individual DBT therapy

Currently, our services are only available in Lakewood, but we hope to be expanding to Brooklyn in the near future.

If you have any questions about DBT or about DBT Skills Center of Ocean County please feel free to post here (anonymous posting has been enabled); or call or email us directly.

We are working on a Brooklyn location, but we don’t have one, yet. I will try to post here when we do (it might still take a few months)

We try to keep our groups smaller. Generally a minimum of 3 people and a maximum of about 9.

We have private DBT therapy and we have individual DBT skills training. (We do also offer other types of therapy, as well.)

If you are looking for individual skills training, it would generally be once a week for approx 45 min. DBT therapy is also generally once a week for 45-50 min. There is a difference in cost between the 2, and it is possible to do both (I.e. come twice a week).

What are you looking for?
