Treat!! My daughter had this last year and the pediatrician said not to treat, and that it would go away on its own. She didn't mention it could take up to a year for it to go away on its own! I left it alone, and a few months later it started spreading on her body and the bumps which only started out as a few, became over 30!! At this point I went to the dermatologist and they treated it and it went away. No scars BH!

It would have been MUCH easier to treat when it was only a few bumps!! All they're doing when they treat it is applying something that will irritate the bumps so the immune system recognizes the molluscum virus. Without treatment, the immune system doesn't recognize it right away and that's why it doesn't fight it and can take up to 1 year. So, whether the dermatologist applies something or you apply apple cider vinegar.. any of these things can work.

Don't wait for this to clear up on its own because in the meantime it keeps spreading on the child's own body and to their peers.

Somewhat OT, but where did this even come from? I never heard of molloscum until about 10 years ago. Then all of a sudden everyone I know has at least one kid with it. It was never a thing when I was a child. (Actually, we never had lice problems in epidemic proportions like we have now, either.)

What's going on?

Treat it with benzoyl peroxide. That's what a specialist told me. If you leave it alone the kid can be covered with them and it's really unsightly.

The dermatologist I went to said it's been around at the same levels as it was 25 years ago. I don't have a source for this, just what she said. Not sure if it's true though- I also didn't have it as a kid and my mom hadn't even heard of it until my daughter had it. My guess is that many kids' immune systems are more suppressed than they used to be due to diet and things that didn't used to be in our food supply in such large proportions (like high fructose corn syrup for example). So they are not as good at fighting it off when exposed. That's my guess - who knows!

I took my son to a dermatologist to treat them because they kept spreading. The dermatologist prescribed Podofilox and it really worked they were gone after about a month or two. I wanted to treat it because I didn't want his preschool teachers to be grossed out about helping in and out of his swim wear..

One kid had terrible horrible case. We did Dermatologist, who said can take up to 2yrs. Went away after about 1yr. They were always bleeding and infected. Child 2 caught it. She has tons of scars but only lasted a few months and it didn't bother her so we didn't treat. Now my 8 yr old caught it. They are all infected. Derm appt next week. Months already. She got cellulitic infection from one.
So yes catchy and treat.

Both my older sons had it and now one of my twins does. I never treated any of them, our pediatrician says it's best to just let it go on its own. It takes a long time, but my older boys cleared up after a few months and hopefully my 15-month old will soon too. As for swimming, I was told to put them in a rash guard shirt and not let them swim if the bumps are open or red. Otherwise we were told it's fine.

So far they are only on her inner thighs and a few on her lower abdomen. She had two pop up near her ear and some teeny tiny almost unnoticeable ones on her check. I panicked which is why I booked the appt but all those on her face dissapeared within days and her face is completely clear now. The ones on her thighs she’s had for months and they didn’t bother her.
Do you think I can wait and see what happens? I don’t want to put her through pain unnecessarily.

They won't necessarily treat in office. Our Dermatologist ordered prescription creams to be put on at home

The pediatrician said the dermatologist will freeze them off. That is so painful.

It is not spreading to other kids, siblings or peers, unless the pimples are being touched or they are taking a bath together.

Dear amother yellow, your dermatologist is incorrect (or did you mis-hear him?) Molluscum CONTAGIOSUM is HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS.

be careful with the creams that your dermatologist recommends. My son once had a wart on his finger and the dermatologist prescribed a cream I never heard of. It was a cream that is used for skin cancer and effects the autoimmune system and is highly controversial to use for a wart. I dropped that dermatologist so fast . He practices in bp.

My daughter had it all over her legs and was really bothered by it. At its peak she had close to 100. Took her to a dermatologist who prescribed acne cream (off label use) which really irritated it. They were all gone within several weeks.

Doesn't hurt. Did it on my 6 yr old. Was tickelish. Not painful.
Do it goes away pretty soon after

My son had it on his elbow area. I ignored it and it was gone within a few weeks. I was shocked. My pedi said it can take up until a year.

Sounds like it's starting to spread. I'd treat now before it keeps spreading. People touch their ears and face more often throughout the day..when it was just on her thigh it was a little more hidden. Just go for the appointment, hear the dermatologist's opinion and treatment options and then make a decision about whether you want to treat it or not.

True - it's not airborne, it spreads through contact... but we're talking about preschoolers here! Plenty of contact..even if they're not directly touching the bumps, it also spreads through contact of surfaces that the molluscum touched (fabric- clothing, couch, carpet, towels). It spreads very easily.

I'm at wits end! My daughter started out with just two spots under her arm, and now has about 30 pimples all over her body. She is extremely annoyed by them, many of them are big, red, bloody and painful...Can anyone who said they saw success through a dermatologist pls recommend one in the brooklyn area? For the last year we've tried every natural remedy under the sun to no avail. Need to get her to one asap to get this over with b4 the summer hopefully! TIA
