PostPosted: Wed, Oct 24 2007, 9:32 pm Post subject: re: cheaper Jewish communities in America

Postville IOWA.
yes, a jewish community in the stix

this is not for the faint hearted. corn fields surround you, and there is no crime.

Community Stats
100+ jewish families
young growing community.
very ecclectic mix of jewish people. (lubavitch, belz, satmar, etc.)
one shul where every one gets along.
a jewish school for boys and girls (not mixed) upto 8th grade
a boys yeshiva (mesivta)
reasonable tuition
a kosher store and restaurant.
mikva (mens and womens)

This community is based on Agriprocessors (rubashkin meat plant).
most of the community is either a shochet or mashgiach (hence the mix of jews), but there are other jobs to be found. there is always an opportunity at the plant for a jewish soul.

housing:
rent for a house, 3-4 bedroom, back/front yard is $400-$600
homes to buy $70k - $120k

car insurance: very very cheap (I pay $600 per year)

downsides:
there is a local supermarket, but major purchases (walmart) is 1/2 hour away.
anything larger (shopping malls) is 1 & 1/2 hour away.

airports:
small ones 1.5 hours away.
major ones 3-5 hours away.

cold iowa winters, but the winters are beautifull.

this is a post from the misc section

I live there, but don't have kids in school yet.
however I did teach in the school.

there is a school for boys and girls till grade 8 (not mixed)

the judaic studies are tought mostly in hebrew.
there is a mesivta for boys.

a kollel just started up. it is to encourage learning in the community, and is not a full time kollel, as most men work full time.
they learn from 8:30-9:30 every night, & are paid $15.oo pr night.

there is a kosher store and restauront.
you can buy anything you need, and they even carry some health food items.

jewish life is very nice. there are all kinds of jews here.
your kids are safe. most kids in the community ride their bikes to school in good weather.
a mommy and me program just started up.
there is a jewish library with seperate mens and womans hours.

can't think whatt else right now,
ask more specific questions.

judaic studies are tought mostly in hebrew. most of the hebrew teachers are israeli. some know english better than others.

for high school, girls go out of town.
there are lubavitch high schools in chicago (5 hrs away)
bais yaakov in minnesota (3 hrs away)
I think those are the closest.
people regularly travel back and forth from there because that's where the major airports are.

there is someone here who is learning how to judge bedika cloths and such.

there is a daycare and a preschool.
the daycare costs $4.oo pr hr, or $3.oo if you work in the school

Very Happy all true, but you earn less too.
but then again, no one's in to fashion or any thing, so you don't have to worry about wearing the same outfit every shabbos, or buying the latest trend in shoes, so you save in clothing expenses.

and you save money, by not going out to eat. (there is only a part time restataunt)

I think postville is great!
but if you don't like a queit life, and really need the excitement of a city., then you would hate it.

( I hate living in a city, dirty, smelly, smoggy, polluted, crime ridden, tiny apt, unfriendly people etc)

I think moving from NYC to Postville, Iowa, I'd literally go insane.

I'm not exactly the "farming" type embarrassed

Yes, my husband is interested in Schita.
Are the people there friendly or do they have cliques? I'm assuming the satmer or belz people prob came there in groups of families....
Surrounded by farrmland is no problem for me, or the long airport drives...I'm from Indiana!

All in all it sound pretty good. When my husband get's a free Sunday I think we'll drive on out over there to check it out.

very cool! you can pm me (or me you since I'm anonymous) and we can show you around if you'd like.
my husband does not work on sunday.

all the women I have met have been very friendly.

there are a lot of israelis here and I don't know hebrew, so I guess that can seem sort of "clicky"

I'm sorry I don't know much about the satmar or belz people.
I know my husband's chavrusa is belz...
actally I don't really know the difference between what anyone is or isn't.

but if you are satmar or belz I can try to find out how many are living here, or whatever questions you might have about them.

Postville has no traffic, no drug deals on street corners, double parking, muggings, or sirens at all hours of the night. I have heard that the cell phone reception is poor. Although the shopping is almost non-existent without a long drive, anything can be ordered online.
